The new start/stop button now allows you to stop the cooking in mid cycle. You can then either pull your food and serve it or enter new settings into your air fryer and start cooking again. This is one of the features they have just added by listening to customers that complained about having to unplug the unit in order to reset cooking times and/or cooking temperatures.You have to give kudos to a company that listens to their customers and makes a better air fryer.

Rapid Air Technology a Quick Lesson

This air fryer uses rapid air technology. Rapid air technology is the ability for the unit to circulate air down the outside of the basket to the bottom of the air fryer. It then moves the air up through the bottom of the basket around the food to the top of the unit. This air not only goes through the food but also through a heating element. When it reaches a fan it goes back through the unit again. GoWISE USA center basket also has slots in the side of it which directs any air which comes up between the center basket in the outer basket into the food and back up through the heating element. This technology is designed to surround the food with hot air thus mimicking cooking by hot oil. That is why with just a little bit of oil on the food you will achieve a crispy exterior.

Cool-touch housing and handle

You don’t have to worry about the outside of the air fryer getting hot. When the unit is closed the only place that gets hot is in the back vent. You do not want to place your hands near this area as you might get burned. It is also a good idea to make sure the back is well ventilated while cooking. As always, when you pull the baskets out of the unit after cooking or shaking the food, the metal baskets are extremely hot and can burn you. Make sure to have heat protection when you set your basket down.

RECIPE BOOK INCLUDED

GoWISE USA 5.8-Quart 8-in-1 Electric Air Fryer comes with a 50-recipe book. This should be more than enough recipes to get you started on a healthier way of cooking for your family. Most air fryer companies only provide you with a 3 to 5 recipe guide.

Handles Can be Faulty

Even though GoWISE has stated they have fixed the problem with their faulty handles, they are still getting complaints. I try my best to keep my family safe and keep from having to clean up a mess. I use an oven mit when I pull my basket out of the air fryer and support the fryer from underneath. Another option I use is to place a potholder on the surface. Then I pull the the basket out onto that potholder. I then release the pan with the food in it that drops onto a plate. These two ways of removing the basket from the air fryer assures me that I am not going to have a basket with hot grease flying through the air spilling on me and/or my kitchen.

FDA-CERTIFIED AND PFOA-FREE

GoWISE uses an FDA certified, PDFOA-free nonstick coating on the inside of the air fryer, basket and pan. While it’s great that you can cook at higher temperatures without fear of getting PFOA in your food, there have been some complaints of this coating chipping while in use. To help prevent this problem I recommend that you do not clean the accessories in a dishwasher. If you should use a dishwasher, only use the powder detergent not the pods. There are chemicals in the pods that will destroy the life of your nonstick coating. And as always, only use plastic or wood utensils to move or remove food from your basket.

Time Is Short with This Air Fryer

This unit only offers a 30-minute timer. While this is great for air frying your French fries and your other quick cooking items, it falls short when it comes to roasting and baking. If you are cooking a whole chicken in this air fryer for 45 minutes to an hour, you will have to reset it for the additional time after the 30 minutes is up. This is inconvenient because you have to pay attention to when the unit stops or your food my cool down. I overcome this by setting a separate timer that I can carry with me so I know when the unit has finished its first cycle. A lot of other units offer a 60-minute timer and some go as far as four hours.

Can you use this Air Fryer on non heat resistant surfaces?

The answer is no. GoWISE does not recommend you place your air fryer on a non-heat resistant surface (see support FAQ). There does not seem to be any warning of this with the materials that come with the unit. There have been complaints from people with quartz countertops. They were unlucky and placed their unit over a seam and used the unit. As a result, the heat broke down the glue and the countertop cracked. So please be extremely careful and make sure that your air fryer is on top of a heat resistant material.

QUALITY

GoWISE has stated that they have addressed the problems with the handle and the coating chipping away yet they are still getting complaints that these problems still occur. I wonder if they are trying to run through the inventory of old products? This is why I’ve downgraded their qualities rating 8.0.

Wrap Up

While the GoWISE USA 5.8 Quart Eight in One Electric Air Fryer is very popular on Amazon, I find it lacking. It does offer a capacity to feed 3 to 5 people, a better start/stop button, rapid air technology, FDA certified and PFOA free coating and a 50-recipe cookbook. The shortcomings outweigh these benefits. The safety problem with the basket falling out by itself, chipping of the coating after short time of use and only a 30-minute timer places this in my second tier of air fryers. This is why I gave a rating of 8.8 out of 10 for this fryer.
